Elder Justice Training

(BBB Midwest Plains)

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is pleased to announce the 2024 Elder Justice Training, scheduled for November 6, 2024, at Nebraska Public Media in Lincoln, Nebraska, with live streaming available for remote attendees. This event aims to educate and empower the community, focusing on protecting the elderly from various financial and social challenges.

The event will begin with a welcome and introductions by Julie Masters, PhD, Terry Haney Chair of Gerontology at the University of Nebraska Omaha, and Mary Wilson, setting the tone for a day of insightful and essential presentations.

Key sessions include:

  • Pig Butchering: Helping You Protect Your Assets (8:45 – 9:45 a.m.): Claire McHenry, Deputy Director of the Securities Bureau at the Nebraska Department of Banking and Finance, will discuss strategies to safeguard personal assets from fraudulent schemes.

  • Cornhusker Caregiving Strong – Nebraska’s Caregiver Tax Credit Act (9:45 – 10:25 a.m.): Jina Ragland, Associate State Director for Advocacy and Outreach at AARP Nebraska, will provide insights into the caregiver tax credit and its impact on Nebraska families.

  • A Clinician’s View of Competence (10:35 – 11:20 a.m.): Steven Wengel, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Director at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry, will share expert knowledge on assessing and understanding competence in elderly patients. This session will be introduced by Julie Chytil from the Alzheimer’s Association Nebraska Chapter.

  • Navigating Community Resources through all Stages of Dementia (11:20 – 12:05 p.m.): Diane Hendricks, LCSW, from Nebraska Medicine’s Division of Geriatrics, Gerontology, and Palliative Care, will explore resources available for dementia patients and their families.

  • VA Justice Program: Aging Veterans (1:05 – 1:50 p.m.): Sandra Miller, Veteran Justice Outreach Social Worker, Department of Veterans Affairs, will address the unique challenges faced by aging veterans.

The event will conclude with a wrap-up session, summarizing the day's key takeaways and providing opportunities for further discussion.
