Silver Sleuth Program
The Houston Education Foundation's Silver Sleuth Program focuses on educating older adults about schemes, scams and fraudulent business practices in the ten counties we serve: Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Galveston, Brazoria, Waller, Wharton, Matagorda, Austin and Colorado. Texas SMP/Senior Medicare Patrol
The Texas SMP/Senior Medicare Patrol is a special program educating Medicare beneficiaries about fraud, waste and abuse. Funded through a grant from the Administration on Aging, the SMP program utilizes volunteers to provide educational seminars to beneficiaries. Interested volunteers can contact Jennifer Salazar. Bi-lingual volunteers in Spanish, Chinese and Vietnamese are especially needed.
Young Consumer Advocate Program (YCAP)
YCAP provides education to youth aged 16 to 22 on such topics as: travel scams, car buying, freshman credit, cell phones and renting with roommates. Volunteers are needed to make presentations to youth aged 16 to 22, in high schools, colleges and community groups. Training is provided and Power Point presentations are available. Spanish speaking volunteers are especially needed.
Consumer Awareness 101
The Consumer Awareness 101 Program focuses on educating consumers on: 1) how to avoid scams and fraudulent business practices, 2) understanding their basic consumer rights, 3) how to handle debt problems, and 4) realizing the real cost of doing business with cash advance and rent to own businesses. Training is provided and Power Point presentations are available. Spanish speaking volunteers are especially needed.
Interns
Unpaid internships are available throughout the year. If available, college students may qualify for a position during the summer under the Exxon Mobil Summer Jobs Program. Internships may include: research assistance, website design, program marketing and social work experience.
