I have been ordering sandwiches for years from a local Subway sandwich restaurant here in *************. I order them online using my Subway account, and then a few minutes later drive to the restaurant and pick up the sandwiches. I always add a tip for the worker by checking the "tip" box in the online form and typing in $5.00 in the "tip amount" entry box. My most recent order from this restaurant was on August 10, 2023: the 2 sandwiches cost $22.32, and with the $5.00 added tip, the total became $27.32. I am happy to leave such tips because the workers wages are well below a living wage - and its hard work. When I picked up the sandwiches from this last order I was stunned to learn that the owner never ever passes the tip amounts on to his workers -- the so-called (by Subway Corp.) "sandwich artists". The worker I dealt with has worked for this La ****** franchise owner for years, and she said she has literally "never once received the tip" from her boss, the franchise owner, from any online order. In other words, the franchise owner has passed on not a cent of the "tip" money left by unsuspecting online customers to his workers for a number of years - probably since he opened for business. This probably adds up to many thousands of undeserved dollars that have gone into his bank account, and not to the poor workers who really need the tip money. Just over the last year, I alone have left over $200 in tips on online orders for the Subway workers at this franchise -- and they have not seen a cent of it. I feel robbed. And I'm certain his employees feel the same. (But they probably remain quiet about it because they can't risk being fired.) And I'll bet lots of other customers who left tips in good faith on their on-line orders would also be very unhappy to learn about this fraudulent practice. Is there anything that can be done about this instance? This cheating may or may not be criminal, but it clearly is a misrepresentation of where the tip money goes.
