On December 28, I left Laverne Woods Apartment complex and my unit was left in excellent condition. About two weeks later, I received a partial refund from of my $950 deposit. I was told that a significant portion of my deposit about 30 percent was used to clean the apartment and for other wear and tear charges. I told the manager that during the walkthrough I was not informed that I would be charged for wear and tear. Moreover, I was not given a list of problem and their expected cost to fix-in violation of law. If I was given such a list, I could have fixed any problems. Furthermore, I told the manager, that I left the unit in excellent condition especially since I had stayed there for nearly four years. I applied putty to any holes in the walls, cleaned the place thoroughly and had gone to the step of buying a carpet cleaner to clean the carpet. Lastly, I pointed out that it was illegal to charge for wear and tear and that I did not even receive any receipts for the charges -even though the law mandates it. After I received the receipts, I responded via email outlining why some of there charges were excessive and were illegal. Their response was first silence and when I pressed, they provided a simple one line sentence: "We have made the appropriate charges and do not wish to engage in this debate." An interesting point to note is that some of the the fees presented in the receipt seemed unjust: For example, for minor painting and patching on walls I was charged for 2 hour's worth of labor and $20 worth of materials - after living there for nearly 4 years. This is clearly a case of being charged for wear and tear. Moreover, minor patching does not take that long. I would like for the rest of my security deposit to be returned.
