On Friday, December 1st, I took my cat to the Monterey Animal Hospital to be euthanized. Ten years ago, this hospital euthanized my previous cat with one shot and she died very peacefully in my arms. I expected the same process and was not told the current procedure. Staff said I would be charged $195 if I wanted to be with ******* when she was euthanized. ******************** came into the room and said she was going to take Scamper into the back room without me to have a catheter put in and be sedated. ******* would no longer be lucid when returned to me. ******************** also said there might be trouble putting a catheter in Scampers vein. I was very upset that I would be separated from Scamp and she wouldnt be conscious when she returned. In essence, I would not be with her for at least half of the euthanasia process. I told the doctor I wanted to be with Scamper when she was given the sedative. Instead of giving her the sedative right then, with me present, ******************** said she would wait to give the sedative when ***** was returned to me. I will always regret that I wasnt able to grasp the possible ramifications of this decision at that time due to my own distress. After waiting 15 minutes, I asked why ******* hadn't been returned to me. Staff immediately returned her with both front paws bandaged and she was terrified. ******************** rushed in and quickly gave Scamp a sedative shot followed immediately by 3 other shots. And ******* was gone.I wrote a letter to Dr. ******************** the owner of the hospital, telling him what had happened and how horrific it was for both ******* and I. The only response I received from **************** was a bill which included $195 to be with Scamper when she was euthanized. In reality, I was with her only in the final two minutes. I paid the total bill for $391 so they would give me Scampers ashes.
