We were vacationing in ********* last week and went to the Gaslamp quarter. After dinner we stopped at Ghirardelli on *******. for ice cream sundaes. They have an outside seating area that is fenced in and thought it would be nice to eat our sundaes and watch people walk by. As we exited the building, there was a person, who we feel was a homeless person sitting right in front of the doorway in plain view of the staff. He was harassing customers as they exited and asking all of them if we had purchased food for him. He was smoking a cigarette and bothering virtually everyone going in and out of the building. We ignored him and went to sit down and eat our ice cream. Another person, who we felt was a homeless Begger also entered the fenced in area and asked us if we had any spare change. We told him no and he then proceeded to dig though the garbage can. The first homeless person then flipped his cigarette **** into the glass of the ice cream shop which showered sparks all over. We saw another customer from the seating area enter the building and talk to a staff member to which we assumed he was complaining about all of this and then the same customer got on his cell phone, not sure if he was calling the police or not. We didn't feel safe at this point and left our barely eaten ice cream sitting on the table and left. I understand about the homeless issue and that it's a problem in *********. I also understand that it's WELL KNOWN and not a recent issue. I feel that Ghirardelli should have had some type of employee presence outside or hire a security company as it seems other establishments along 5th Ave were doing to chase non-customers/Beggers/homeless people away from paying tourists/customers. Ghirardelli should take some responsibility and have an employee out at the front entrance. I'd like a refund of the $29 I paid for ice cream sundaes that we barely ate and some type of confirmation from them that they'll do better to protect their paying customers.
