I was a client of SMPsychotherapy and was charged the full amount for a therapy session in January 2023 ($180) even though I had insurance. When asked for a refund, I was instructed by the therapist's office to submit a claim to my insurance for reimbursement. I did that and the insurance issued a check in June 2023 to the therapist's office. The insurance company stated that they issued the check to the provider instead of me because they are an in-network provider and that's their procedure to forward payment to the provider. The insurance company also indicated that the check had not been cashed yet. I reached out to the therapist's office in September 2023 to inquire about the check. I was told the issue was forwarded to the billing department. I did not hear anything back so I followed up with them on October 10, 2023, and did not receive a response. I reached out again on January 10, 2024, and received an email about another credit I was owed, but nothing about the 180 dollars that was due to me. I called and emailed the office again on January 25, 2024, and was told the office would get back to me "as soon as possible". On Jan 26, 2024, the owner of the practice contacted me to say they were looking into the matter. I did not hear anything and followed up again by email on April 25, 2024. I received a response on April 26, 2024, stating that the billing department was nudged. I did not hear a response and reached out again on July 20, 2024. I received a response on July 21, 2024, stating that they nudged the billing department again.
