I recently had emergency surgery and post-surgical care at UF Health in Leesburg, FL. Upon arrival by ambulance, and in order to be admitted, I was told that my insurance company would not approve inpatient care and I had to be treated in an observation unit. I was presented with a computer tablet with an entirely blank screen with nothing but a place to sign my name. I was in severe pain and knew from my ER visit that I needed surgery, so I signed the box trusting that the insurance would get worked out. I did have surgery later that day and was on IV antibiotics and other medications for another two days. In total, I spent three days and two nights in the hospital. I inquired about my status as inpatient with a nurse and three separate doctors as to whether my status had been changed to inpatient yet. They were all very evasive. The discharge doctor told me that even if he changed it, the billing department would change it back. I have since corresponded with the hospital and they have not responded to my request to correct my bill to indicate inpatient status rather than observation. I searched online and have learned that hospitals do this to protect their ******** STARS rating which equates to revenue. I have private insurance and ******** has nothing to do with me. I also have private hospital indemnity insurance which is denying my claim because they will only reimburse me $100 for observation versus $2200 for inpatient stay. I am entitled to the full amount to help offset the cost that I incurred for the complex care that I received. The hospital documentation even states that I received the same care at the same cost in their observation unit as I would have as inpatient. If that is true, then why did they lie to me and say that my insurance wouldn’t pay for inpatient care? Clearly, there is something bigger going on here and it is costing me net $2100 out of pocket in lost insurance reimbursement.Customer response
