I brought my vehicle in for a 150k mile service. They told me whoever put my a/c compressor in my car had left the bolts off and I would need a new engine and they quoted me about $1200. This isnt even mechanically possible because the compressor would have been just floating around and the belt could not have remained tight and the a/c among other things would not have functioned. When I had it looked at the original factory bolts were still there. One had been sheered off by their technician. Instead of taking responsibility they tried to get me to buy an entire new engine. This is horrible business practice and should not be allowed to go unchecked.Business response

This customer brought the car in with complaint of belt noise and an oil change on 04/12/2023. It was determined that the belt tensioner was weak. Customer was quoted price to change tensioner and the customer consented. Upon disassembly it was found that there was a bolt missing and one broken off in the engine block for the tensioner. It appears that the ** compressor was fairly new and the tensioner bracket would need to be removed to gain access to it. Customer was called at this time and informed of this condition. We explained that we could try to extract the broken bolt with no guarantee of success and the customer gave authorization to proceed. We then proceeded with the job. We spent several hours trying to extract broken bolt without success. Everything was re assembled with new bolt to replace missing one. Customer was advised. At no time did we state that the compressor was coming off. We also did not try to sell the customer an engine for $1200, as we do not do engine replacements. See attached invoice for communications and approvals. In conclusion we did not break any bolts, informed the customer as soon as we saw the broken bolts. Final note, on 07/18/2022 the customer brought the car in for an ** check and it was diagnosed with a leaking ** compressor which we DID NOT replace.Customer response

I am rejecting this response because:
Because it doesnt make sense. If the compressor was missing a bolt and just hanging on by one broken bolt, which I say they did, it wouldnt work at all. And its a fabrication that they didnt tell me they could get me a different motor. Also why on EARTH did the manager of the location reach out to me after I picked up the car if everything was fine? He asked me if everything was ok. And Ive spoken with other mechanics locally and conveyed my experience and theyve confirmed that Tommys mechanics are known for poor quality work like this. Everyone needs to be aware of the horrible scam work they do so they arent tricked. Luckily I was not.
Sincerely,
