  I started working with ********************************* at Sikich last year after my CPA retired. My girlfriend and I had an intake call and discussed all of the issues that were relevant to our tax situation. When ***** sent over the paperwork after that call, she said in her email, "Our firm has a minimum charge of $1,000 for individual returns. I estimate that we should be able to complete each return and that I can consult on the issues above within that minimum charge, per return." We went through the process of preparing taxes, including getting on calls when ***** requested them. All of the topics discussed on these calls had been raised in our intake call. After my taxes were submitted, I received a bill for $2,200. There was no indication between the estimate and the bill that we had departed from the estimate at all, much less that we had incurred 120% more fees than the estimate provided. When I raised this issue to *****, her response was to release us as clients. I have paid $1,000 of my bill and I would like the remainder to be adjusted. If the communication had been different along the way as these fees were being incurred, that would have been a different situation.

  For several years, I used ******************* at Sikich to file my tax returns because I was an ex-pat living in *********** and ***** has experience with ex-pat taxes. When I first met *****, he was not working at Sikich, and then about 2 years ago, he moved there. In 2021, my brother and I asked ***** (at Sikich) to file our tax returns, and prepare an estimate before proceeding. My brother was included because we own rental properties together. We provided ***** with all of the relevant information and ***** said he would file them and. However, ***** quickly stopped responding to us. This was very strange because in prior years, he was good about responding to us. After weeks of calling him and emailing him, we sent him a final email that said if we don't hear from him before the tax deadline, we will have no choice but to ask another person to file our returns. ***** never responded, Sikich never responded. We had to hire someone else at the last minute, and it was expensive to get them filed. Months after the tax returns were filed, Sikich contact me with several invoices, many of them related to services that I never agreed to. I never signed a contract with Sikich, I never agreed to a price, I never asked for anything other than ***** to give us an estimate for drafting our tax returns. Even though I have emailed and called ***** and Sikich several times to discuss the invoices, they have never responded to me.
