I made a reservation at Chicago Getaway Hostel on Feb 7, 2023, for Feb 7 and 8. I paid $42.26 for each night in a dormitory with bunk beds, (plus an additional $1 charge which I don't know what it's for). It is advertised that the stay includes the use of the communal kitchen. On the morning of Feb 8 between 10 and 11 am, I went to the kitchen and dining room and was told they were closed. The sign at the kitchen says "closed from midnight to 7 am". At the front desk I suggested to update the sign to reflect the open hours of the kitchen. "Is it closed at this time every day?" I asked. To this the manager on duty roared "You're out of here! Pack your stuff!" and demanded I vacate the premises immediately. He agreed to provide me a refund for that night of the 8th (shown in attached document), but I asked for also a refund for the previous night, since all before the day's checkout time he was kicking me out, verbally abusing me, and I had been denied access to the kitchen and dining room during the hours it is advertised to be open and available for guest use. In response to this the manager called the police! When the police arrived he did not attempt to give any story that I had done anything wrong. Everyone present agreed that I had never raised my voice. No one had any particular accusation of wrongdoing or policy I had violated. It was clear to everyone present, including the police who were very sympathetic towards me, that this manager was simply having a bad day and taking it out on me. Clearly, the services promised in exchange for my payment for the previous night, i.e. ability to stay there, not being verbally abused, and use of the kitchen/dining room, UNTIL the day's checkout time of 11 am, were not fulfilled. Therefore I require a refund, in the amount of $43.26, for the night of Feb 7, 2023, from Chicago Getaway Hostel. Furthermore such arbitrary and abusive behavior should not be permitted practice at a hostel.
