- Currently, PBNC operates the following major direct service programs:
* The Preschool Photo-Refractive Vision-Screening Program is the largest of any Prevent Blindness affiliate in the country. The technology used can detect potential vision problems before symptoms are noticeable to either parent or child. Those found to have potential vision problems are referred to eye care professionals for further treatment. Last year, over 33,000 children were photo-screened in North Carolina.
* PBNC's Children's Vision Screening Training Program trains and certifies volunteer vision screeners in the state's schools and health departments. Over 6,600 volunteers certified by PBNC staff conducted screenings in all 100 counties last year. These volunteers provided over 503,000 individual screenings to school children during the most recent school year.
* The Adult Vision Screening Program provides free on-site vision screenings to at-risk and low-income adults and senior citizens. PBNC collaborates with senior centers, free clinics, federally qualified health centers, health fairs, the NC State Fair, and low-income housing to provide our services on-site and free of charge. During the most recently completed screening year, over 5,800 adults were screened.
* VSP's Sight for Students and Mobile Eyes voucher programs target uninsured individuals whose household earns less than 200% of federal poverty level. Services include a free eye exam from a participating doctor, as well as glasses. Free vision services worth over $333,000 were redeemed by North Carolina's children and adults through these programs last year.
