We started the date 02/23/22. We were having this company remodel an apartment that we had at **** ******** *** **** ****. As per the estimate, we had agreed that my family and I would do the demo. SS home renovations LLC was to continue the next step. As per the estimate, they were to patch the drywall holes, prime and paint the ceiling, and walls. With a charge of $3600.00. When SS Home renovation came to us several days later, they told us that the painting and the ceilings were done. We at that time met with him at the apartment and showed him The marks on the wall that we’re not done. Per the pictures I have. He then was to install light switches and outlets for the price of $400. Those were not complete. At this point we met with him and told him that we were no longer going to have him finish the rest of the projects that he had given an estimate for. So at this time, that he said he was done painting, we found multiple holes in the drywall that were not patched. We also found multiple switches and outlet covers that he had not put in. We also have pictures that he took the face plates and switches and as he said he could not find them. He thought that we had taken them in later came back and said that he did have them. But we have not seen them. He does agree that he owes us money back. He has sent us a check for $600 that we have not cashed. We think that he owes us $400 more.

February 23, 2022 I met with ********* ***** and *** ******* to discuss a renovations project in their duplex located in Lima, OH. ********* explained to me that her father *** owned the property but was not able to deal with the renovations project. ********* explained that although she was inexperienced with construction work and also lived out of town, she was going to be the point of contact for the decisions on the project. I told ********* that it wouldn’t be a problem and if she needed any help or questions to contact me.
I met again with ********* and *** on March 3 to discuss changes and sent an updated estimate to *********. At this meeting, I changed the f***t door knob and dead bolt after *** agreed to the price and gave me a key to the property then wrote a check to me for a deposit on the work. ********* let me know that her boys will be there over the weekend to do the demo.
March 7th we started the project. We removed additional items from the walls and cleaned up sharp staples and nails from the floor to prevent our paint sprayer from being damaged. ********* agreed to additional work with the project, resulting in us purchasing more materials for the job. ********* said it was ok to paint the existing trim white, then after talking to *** on the phone, he explained that he wanted to keep the dark trim, but install new. We removed all of the trim that was not included on the original estimate.
March 9th, ********* sent me pictures of the primed walls asking if it looked normal. I explained that the streaks on the wall was from overlapping coats of the sprayer. ********* apologized and explained she doesn’t know anything about the work. March 12, ********* sent me pictures of the painted rooms and close ups of brush marks from around the door trim that was removed and a small piece of tape that was over looked and painted over. I explained to her that the brush marks there previously as we did not brush around the trim because the trim was removed. I also explained to her that we must have overlooked the tape and will touch up everything before we are finished.
March 15th, I met ***, *********, and her boys at the property to discuss the project. After spending an hour, going room to room with everyone discussing their thoughts on the project, we concluded that there would be no other changes to the project besides changing out the lighting in a few rooms. March 16th, ********* text me saying her boys want to do some of the work that I already had scheduled to do with the agreed on price. She explained that they do not have a lot of time but she feels she needs to give them a chance. I explained to her that I need to know exactly what Is going on and I cannot keep changing things and discussing 4 different peoples opinions on the project. ********* replied with “im sorry, I thought the contractor was to work for the client and do what they wanted.”
After reading this text from *********, I called her to explain how hiring a contractor works and that the contractor does not “work for the client” like a W2 employee. The client cannot make the contractors schedule or tell them how to do their job. After ********* explained to me that she wanted her sons to complete most of the work that we already agreed on my company to do and had scheduled to do, I told her that we will have to withdraw from job but we will finish the painting. She agreed and said that if they need help with any additional work if I would like us to do more.
March 18th, ********* text me again telling me how her uncle wants to start painting in the kitchen on the following Monday. This was the final change that made me make the decision to fully withdraw from the project and issue a refund for the uncompleted work. I calculated the price per square footage from the original estimate that they agreed to and multiplied that to the amount of square footage that was completed. I added everything to the final invoice and subtracted the deposit and it came to $575.61 so I rounded up to the nearest hundred to account for any possible concerns. March 20,  I text her explaining to her that because of the multiple changes in the agreement, confusion and multiple different opinions from 3 generations of family on a project that hasn’t even been completed that we would have to withdraw and I would be sending a refund. ********* responded with her father’s name and address so I could send the check and said thank you.
March 21st, ********* text me again saying “you sent two different invoices. The first one seems to be right for $894.13. The second one doesn’t quite add up says you’re giving 600 back?” then sent some pictures of some of the materials I left for them to complete the job that I already purchased. I replied March 22 letting her know to give my number to *** and have him contact me with any of his concerns. The first invoice that she was talking about, I accidently sent to her without the taxes that was added on the original price. The second is the correct invoice with the adjusted price to what I calculated.
*** eventually contacted me and said that he had a painter come and check out what was not completed and said he gave him an estimate of $400. I explained to *** that I calculated the square footage of the property and came to an amount of price per square foot and I came to a total price of what was finished and even rounded up for the refund. *** threatened the success of my business if I did not pay him additional refund. I explained I would go over everything again but I came to a correct price off of the original estimate that he agreed to.

Neither *** nor ********* have a reason for their additional refund.
*** has not provided a professional estimate for what he claims he received.
I calculated and provided the price per square foot cost on the completed paint work.
I provided an invoice that *** and ********* both agreed to.

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:

(BBB transcription of phone call with consumer)
The paint job that was completed was unsatisfactory, and consumer would like it to be known that the business stated that he does not work for the client he works for himself and he will do it his way. There were holes in the wall that were not patched prior to painting. The consumer gave business a chance to go back and fix the issue but the business went and took back all of his extra supplies and he didn't fix the issues.

      Sincerely,

      ********* *****
