June 11, **** ****** walked off the job he had been working on for several weeks at my home. I paid him $1,950 up to that time to paint a 280-sq-ft room and install vinyl flooring. When he received that amount, June 8, he told me it covered the work so far, and all that remained to do was fixing his oversights and mistakes, which I would not have to pay for. He joked on June 10th that he wanted to get done with the job because "I.m not making any(more) money." Then on June 11, while still working on correcting his mistakes, he told me he wanted $700 more. I was shocked and asked him for some kind of justification, like a time-sheet or invoice. He refused to provide an explanation, packed up his stuff and left me with correcting the problems -- which include installing 2 thresholds that he made after cutting the flooring incorrectly, painting the places that he missed or applied the paint too thinly and hanging a bi-fold door. (I purchased the flooring, paint, door -- those were not part of the payment to him.) Much of the experience with *** ****** was frustrating as he would work one day and not the next, then return not remembering where he was, what he needed. Then he'd have to leave again to shop or visit his storage shed to get the needed tools/supplies.

She refused to pay to finish. She stated she already paid me so much money. She said I have no more money and cant pay. If you get the money I'm more then willing to come out to complete the work.

      Customer response

I am rejecting this response because:

I had already paid for the job in full; the only remaining work was fixing his mistakes. If I were wealthy, I told him, I would just cough up the extra $700 he demanded to get this over with, but he had told me the day before that the $1,950 covered the work. All that remained was his correcting the problems he had created. There is no way a customer should have to pay $700 more for workmanship fixes. He charged the professional rate of $65 an hour and I received sloppy performance. In fact, **** created a threshold problem with one of his mistakes, and he should fix that.

Since this awful experience, I have spoken to other independent handymen who say I paid too much for the work that was done.

The day **** demanded $700 more, I requested some kind of itemization -- timesheet. He refused to show me any paperwork that would justify the additional payment. It seemed he pulled that figure out of thin air and had no justification. Instead of proving to me that he deserved the extra payment, he packed up his tools and left me with the mistakes he had made.

Also, prior to starting the job, I had asked **** how much he charged to install vinyl flooring. He responded "2" -- which I presumed meant $200 for the room we were talking about. He tells me later that he was charging $2 per square foot. There is no way for someone to know that is what he meant by 2. I find that very deceptive.
