I received a quote for home remodel on July 11, 2023 for $13797.58 (see attached) and accepted that. Matthew W**** started the remodel September 8 and was given $5500 down payment. The job was supposed to be finished in 2-3 weeks. On September 15, Matthew got another $5000 payment. I needed to go on a business trip for a week starting October 2. While I was away, Matthew “finished” the job on October 3 and requested a final payment from my wife for over $10000. My wife was shocked, so she put up some fight. But she is also handicapped and home-alone, so she wrote out a check for $10000. I received a receipt for these payments on October 4 – and a new invoice after that (see attached). The invoice on October 4th included an additional $3067 to “Cut floor joist to lower into floor for the shower pan.” I never requested this and don’t understand why he did this. “Install shower pan and waterproof. Build and install shower curb and waterproof. Install tile on shower floor and build curb for shower door.” All of that was part of the original quote. The invoice also included an additional $3500 for materials. At no point between September 8 and October 4 did Matthew W**** say that we were going to go over the quoted materials budget or that the cost for labor would anything but what was quoted. Moving on from being overcharged and on to quality of work. Holes in drywall with electric wires filled with expanding foam and covered with mud. Vanity top not cut to correct size. No slope on the shower floor. Shower trim piece left dangling. Gas line for the old range was to be removed, so new electric range does not slide to the wall. The power line for the range is not secured to the joists. Breakers installed imbalanced (see pictures). I texted Matthew with two of the complaints on October 7. He replied back a few hours later “OK, Ill stop by and get another coat of mud on it.” I have not heard from him since.

      Business response

      12/11/2023

Hello. From what I have gathered from this so far, there was an issue with the work done. When I spoke with the homeowner about the problem and offered to fix it free of charge, they then started to tell me that the work that was done was not what they asked even though they approved everything during the build and are telling me that the wife now feels threatened by us and did not want us in the house to fix our mistake. She says we forced her to sign off on the invoice and demanded a check while her husband was not home. I would have waited for him if she had said anything at that time for him to return if that’s what she wanted. I believe they are mad because they made changes to the build and did not want to pay for the extra work that was done. This is just a brief breakdown of what happened. If you need anything else, please feel free to ask.

      Thanks,

      Matthew w****

      Customer response

      12/11/2023

I am rejecting this response because: i was originally going to accept the offer to fix everything that was done wrong, but when i told my wife this, she became very upset and admitted that she felt shock, panic, and threatened when Matt asked for $7000 more than expected and did not want Matt in her house ever. I explained this to Matt and this seemed to anger him. Matt insists that i had requested changes from the original quote and he had said that these changes would cost extra. I insist that my wife and i did not make any substantial changes and Matt NEVER said there was any change to the final cost. I understand that this difference in memory would be difficult for BBB to mediate, but i offer that "sinking the shower into the floor" is an odd idea and does not make sense for us - or anyone.

Also, I asked Matt for an accounting for materials cost; this was never provided, but we were billed $6000 for materials. I believe that the actual cost to be under to $3000 since i payed for all the tile and fixtures. I would be happy to pay for a reputable remodeler to come out and give us an estimate for material cost - and cost to finish the existing work.

      Regards,
