On May 29, 2021, I rented a car from AVIS at Salt Lake City Airport. When my family returned the rental car back to AVIS on June 5, 2021 at 10:33 am after our trip, we asked the employee, who we returned the car to, to check if there’s any damage on the vehicle that we would be responsible for. He said that he sees no damages on the vehicle. So, we paid for the full rental fee through him at that moment as we returned the car. I asked to confirm again with him that he recognizes no damages on the vehicle. He did say yes and my family returned home with no concerns. But, about 3 months after the trip, I received a single paper through a mail stating that I was issued an amount of $294 due to damage on the vehicle’s front window. There was no other evidence such as an image of the damage or an invoice of the fixing cost attached. Also, without confirming with me, AVIS just took the fee out of our bank account. I reached out to AVIS to notify them that we confirmed with their employee and that we weren't aware of any damages. Their response was same all throughout repeating that it was our fault. We even reached out to the AVIS manager, but he just kept on saying that we should just file the claim on our insurance. About a few weeks later, we just decided to file the claim under our insurance since they wouldn’t do anything for us. The insurance company later reached out to us stating that unfortunately they can’t cover this claim since it’s already been more than 90 days and AVIS told them that we were aware of the damage before we left. This made no sense to our family at all. Before we filed a claim to our insurance company, we even called AVIS to confirm that there was no damage that we were aware of. If the damage on the vehicle was actually caused by our family, shouldn’t they at least send us the evidence that the damage actually exists and it was caused by us looking at the time of the damage? It's also suspicious that it took that long (3 months) to notify us.
