My 7-year-old German Shepard (GSD) Shelby wasn't feeling well so we brought her to the Maryville Small Animal Medical Center (MSAMC)... 4 hours later they put her to sleep. We had been going to the clinic for a little over a year and they never let us know that GSD's have a tendency for splenic tumors, which after doing some research I found out are most often caught too late and are typically deadly. All that said, that is not why I am giving the MSAMC a 1 out of 5 stars...the "1" is because of the owner Jonathan. When we had to make the decision to put Shelby down, our hearts were being torn from our chests and we were upset. (VERY UPSET). I wanted answers. I wanted to know why they never suggested the routine preventative tests that might have given us insight into what was happening before it was too late. I admit I acted emotionally and inappropriately, and a week later I got a call from Jonathan letting me know that he canceled the upcoming appt for my other GSD (where we were going to do all the available tests to ensure she was ok). He told me that my actions during the visit when they put my dog to sleep were unacceptable (i.e. I was loudly asking using very colorful language... Why did this happen...Why didn't you do the tests...etc) . He then said I had to pay the $820 bill, or they would not give us Shelby's ashes or records. (We never considered not paying our bill). He proceeded to give me examples of other dogs in their practice that had to be put down because of the same issue. To which I stated, maybe you should start doing more preventative tests instead of letting these dogs die under your care. Then he got very upset and said something to the effect of - THIS IS YOUR FAULT! YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKEN BETTER CARE OF YOUR DOG! (He was on speaker phone and my wife immediately began to cry).
