I reserved a midsized car from Hertz a couple of weeks in advance of a drive from Cleveland to Detroit. My car is a bit older and this seemed like a good idea. I picked the car up Monday eve 8/25/22. The clerk sent me, alone, to zone 3. Only very compact cars there; Chevy Sparks I think. She said I could pick from nearby if I wanted. So I picked a Honda Civic next to zone 3. The car was unlocked, keys in it, and no Hertz employees visible anywhere that I could see. In hindsight, I did notice a musty smell in the car, but it was NOT troublesome enough to switch out. That, and there were no cars to switch to, other than those mini cars. I went on my way for a 48 hour trip which I had to shorted to 24 hours. The drop off lot was pretty empty except for 2 employees sitting in chairs at the end of a row. I drove the car to them where I was told to leave the keys in the car and I was free to go. So I did just that. The original 2 day rental was reserved at $183, which somehow had become $195 when picking up the car. Ok, ok, $12. Returning it a day early should net me a lower price. Later that evening I received a receipt. There was a $146 charge, reversed out, but a $400 cleaning charge added for "smoking". I have been a non-smoker my entire life. I emailed and called and was told it wasn't just smoking, but "weed". That is even more ridiculous as I do not partake in this at all either. Trying to get this trumped-up charge removed and charged only for the original $145. I do not smoke, cigarettes OR weed. I was the only person in the car and I had it for 24 hours. A pre-existing smell existed but it didn't smell like pot to me. I've been told there is nothing they can do. They had to, after all, remove the car from service to clean it. They don't get that there is no way I added a smell to their car. Impossible for me to do. Can a rental firm just make up charges like this and customers can't defend themselves? Something is wrong here.

my insurance company rented a vehicle for me from hertz car rental, they paid all the costs for me. however , after I returned the vehicle on 04/29/22, i realized I had been charged an extra 264 dollars on my card (they had taken my card details to charge a pre-authorization of 50 dollars). When i went to pick up the vehicle, the hertz associate asked me to sign to pick-up the vehicle. I told them i didn't want any services such as damage/collusion insurance because my insurance was still active. I asked them why they had charged me and also charged my insurance company for rental charges- they told me i had signed to purchase some coverage. i tol d them i didnt and i only had placed my signature to pick up the car and also to pre-authorization. They are yet to refund my 264 dollars and also to release my pre-authorization hold of 50 dollars. I really want this cash refunded because its my life line after i lost my car. kindly assist.

*********************************************************** rented a vehicle from Hertz after an accident I had experienced on January 2, 2022. At this point March 5, 2022, I have spent well over $1,500.00 to keep the rental until my vehicle is repaired. 100% of my payments were on time and the extension of the vehicle was always done in a timely manner. During my rental agreement, I experienced an accident in which a major pothole popped the passenger side tires. The vehicle had to be towed to the Hertz location I initiated the rental through. Given that I had no control over this incident, I was unable to clean the vehicle out, and to fill up the gas tank like expected in the rental agreement. As a result of this, Hertz would not let me exchange my rental for another one, treating me as if I had control over an uncontrollable accident. Every single employee was rude and unprofessional. They all lacked empathy and refused to help rectify an already unfortunate situation. Employees would not properly identify themselves, specifically Trey, and used slang and other patronizing terms like "yup" and "disgusting." Furthermore, Hertz has already been found guilty in the court of law for overcharging customers by falsely documenting the state of the rental upon return and the circumstances in which the vehicle was returned. Because I was unable to thoroughly detail and fuel the rental upon return, they used this against me and furthermore slandered my name across every Hertz within my area. I am now without a vehicle, cannot commute to work or take care of the basic errands required to be a functioning member of society.

I rented a suv prior to travelling. When I arrived at the desk to get vehicle I was asked how many people I had and how much luggage I had. I said I had my husband son and me, with four bags. I was told it was unlikely my luggage would fit in the suv I was getting(ford escape) and I should upgrade to make travelling more comfortable. I asked how much she said 292 dollars I declined and said we would be fine. She then proceeded to say I wouldn't do that you will be very uncomfortable, let me see if I can get something cheaper. Then told me she could get a bigger suv for 192 dollars. I said yeah sure if it will fit my luggage lets do it. Prior to leaving she didnt give me an invoice or anything showing the cost of upgrade, once I got to my hotel that night and checked my email I saw I was charged 268.87 for the upgrade because of all the fees which she did not tell me about. When I asked how much it would cost I asked the total cost. I feel like I was taken advantage of. I was tired from travelling and just wanted to get on the road and she keeps telling me the vehicle I spent a lot of money on was not going to fit us. After seeing the bill I decided to look at the difference between the ford escape vs the chevy equinox just to see how much different the cargo space was. Imagine my surprise when I find out the ford escape cargo area is actually bigger then the chevy equinox. She upsold me for something less likely to hold my luggage that she said would be a problem. I tried to email and they didn't even have the courtesy to email me back.
