In all cases, victims deposit the check and send money back to scammers. Scammers are often successful because consumers don't realize that crediting a bank account does not mean the cashed check is valid. Be advised that cashier's checks and postal money orders can also be forged.
If you have deposited a fake check into your account, notify your bank, and the bank that appears to have issued the check. If you are a victim of a Fake Check Scam, you need to file a fraud complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, BBB Scam Tracker, Postal Inspection Service and your state Attorney General's Office.
