The company phone is answered only by the secretary and the owner refused to speak to us directly, communicating only through our contractor.What started out as poor communication turned into manipulation. Big Oak provided a very light character sample board. The wood that arrived was rustic. Big Oak refused to allow us to refuse it. They blamed us for trusting the sample they provided rather than independently looking up the manufacturer's website to double check that their store's sample aligned with the pictures in the manufacturer's catalogue.The contract stated that the customer is responsible for 15% of the material costs upon job cancellation. We had already paid a deposit in excess of that amount so we expected to be able to part ways. Instead, they sent us a **** for the entirety of the materials and threatened to place a lien on our condo if we did not pay. Eventually they offered a courtesy credit. Though it was a pittance, they had backed us into a corner with their refusal to take back the wood and their readiness to escalate to court action. They proceeded to manipulate and make false promises. At the end of the first day of installation they tried to get us to sign a document to promise them an additional and unspecified amount of money, otherwise they would not finish the job. When we refused to sign, our contractor had to step in. They threatened to walk off the job and agreed to return only if we were fully absent.They took the lack of supervision as an opportunity to use the rejected wood in the most prominent locations of each room and to ignore our requested pattern for the kitchen even though we had laid it out as instructed by our contractor.We hope that no one else has to experience this type of unprofessionalism and lack of ethics.
