I called this company to cancel an LA ********** subscription that I didn't even know I had in June 2023. However, I still received recurring charges on my credit card from OC Register, so I called again in November 2023 and they confirmed that my account was closed in June. Since November 14, 2023, I have been in constant contact with customer service, requesting that these recurring charges stop and that I be refunded for these continued charges. **************** insists that they've requested Finance expedite my request, but I continue to receive these monthly charges--the latest one for $109.42, SIGNIFICANTLY more than all the other charges I have received to date. I have frozen my credit card because of these unwanted charges for a service I have been told cancelled long ago. I am requesting that I be removed from these recurring charges and that I be refunded the $354.09 that I have been charged since my subscription was cancelled.Initial Complaint

I signed up for a newspaper subscription accidentally with the Orange County Register in November of 2022. I immediately cancelled after I realized. I noticed on December 4, 2023 that I had still been receiving monthly charges. I called and provided the necessary information and was told that the account had been closed and no charges could be found. I was told that they were flagging the issue to their finance team. After a month of back and forth, I got a response to the email I sent on December 4th that I had sent detailing the issue and providing proof of the charges. I was asked for a phone number before being told the same thing I heard over the phone. During this time, this same company has charged me again, now twice. In total, they have charged me $591.73 despite my account with them being nonexistent.Business response

Thank you for contacting us. Our records indicate that a subscription to the Loas ****************** **** ordered to begin 7/24/2022. At the time of order a payment for $20.00 was made. The subscription was not stopped until 11/20/22, even after we sent numerous renewal notices. The request to cancel was sent to us via email. As a courtesy to you at that time we adjusted off the negative balance and actually refunded the $20.00 originally paid at the time of the order on 7/24. No other charges have been applied.
I also see a second subscription started by yourself, at an address in ****** **. Again this subscription started on 7/24/2022 but stopped on 8/26/2022. The subscription was disputed by a "*********************" and we again issued a refund for the $20.00 paid.
Is it possible that you started a third subscription? To help us locate the account the funds are being applied to I will need additional information:
- the first 6 digits of the credit or debit card being charged
- the last 4 digits of the same credit r debit card
I will have our finance team work on this as soon as I hear back from you.

The subscription started in July, apologies. However, the charges in the screenshots I sent are reflective of the accurate period. I never received a renewal notice virtually. Regardless, not only did I cancel, as you have on record, but I never received any kind of refund including the $20 you claim to have sent. Please send proof of that so we can begin to resolve that aspect of the issue. I didnt start a subscription afterwards and never lived in ******. *** never met a ********************* and dont know why that charge is associated with my card. I didnt sign up for another subscription, as I cancelled once in 2022 and have never once again contacted your company before reaching out recently for a refund. I signed up for the account through students who came to my door for a fundraiser. After learning about this new account ************************ to a stranger, I worry that this could be a fraud-related issue. Can you please confirm that you work with local schools in some capacity for fundraisers? Im not providing any numbers of my card since I have already had issues with this company taking funds from my account. I noticed during my phone calls with customer service however, that things were consistently misspelled when put into your internal system. Almost every call, I had to correct information such as my phone number, my email, and my former address. Since all of these were misspelled, I think the issue could also simply be a misspelling thats not showing up when searching for the correct information. If theres any other information I can provide that isnt payment information, I will provide it. I was charged yesterday, $54.76 for LB Press Telegram and $35.78 for OC Register Subs; I think that you could also find the account associated with my card by finding the account that was charged with those amounts at that time. While Im sure that this would be more intensive on your end, it could yield a solution since I am not providing payment information to you.Business response

The refund for the ***** was sent to a **** card ending in ****. It could very well be the card is not yours and that somehow we crossed account details with another account,which would exlain why you never received the refund..
Again, so that we may check to find where exactly these charges were placed I will need the information asked for in my previous message. I must know: :
- the first 6 digits of the credit or debit card
- and the last 4 digits of the same card.
Without these key pieces of information we will be unable to locate the said charges.

A man came to my door to promote this news service, and told me it is the FREE 8 weeks trial, I would decide if I want keep this service after the trail. I gave him a VOID check. but the truth is this company is charging me $26 per month for the past couple months, I have never received any mail, or email or text message from them. Because that guy intentional put fake phone#, fake email in the account that opened for me. I never noted it until I check my bank account today. It is totally a scam! A fraud activity in real!!! I don't want your services and never wanted. Please remove my account from your system and get my scamed money back!Business response

The "student" was asking for a donation for college. He did not inform me that he were doing sales, told that my money helped him to get in college, never told that it was subscriptions for the newspaper. I have never received any newspaper delivery either. Today women called me to inform I had outstanding balance 26$ and I needed to pay it. In order to cancel the subscription I needed to pay as well this money. It is a fraud activity in real!!! I dont want your services and never wanted. Thank you for contacting us via the Better Business Bureau portal.
Our records indicate that a subscription was placed, and payment was made. The 8 week prepaid period ended and because we never received notification to request cancellation, delivery continued. Our records lso indicate that you told the person who called you to cancel seevice, which was completed. The balance owed was adjusted off at that time and the account now shws a "zero balance". Hopefully one day soon you will give us the opportunity to again deliver our product to you.

SEPT 19,2023 I CALLED AND ASKED TO GET PAPER. Employee told me the best rate was a $200 year fee with cancellation anytime. I called to cancel the register told me it was unrefundableBusiness response

Our records indicate having received a call on Monday 10/23 with a request to cancel delivery. The cancellation became effective Tuesday 10/24, and at that time a refund request in the amount of $175.63 was sent to ****************.
Our records also indicate that you called back yesterday 10/24 and restarted your subscription effective this morning. The refund request was voided and the funds have been applied to the subscription which has been restarted.
Your filing raises some confusion. The original order was placed online and to process the subscription order and providing payment, the terms and condision were accepted. Our terms and considitions speaks to subscriptins being continuous for the duration of the paid term and being unrefundable.

Heres the full story. I called to cancel my paper and get a full refund. When I decided to try the paper I called first I was told by the phone representative I would have 60 days to cancel. I then went ahead and signed up online for a year for $200. When I called to have my paper canceled & get a refund The first representative told me she was transferring me to a supervisor and she hung up on me. The second representative told me shed have the retention call me back and the retention department never called back. When I called for the third time to get a supervisor that supervisor told me I was paying for the newspaper but wasnt getting it. That would be a sweet deal for you wouldnt it? Keeping my $200 and not even having to deliver a newspaper. Thats when I told the representative to send me the paper then. If Im paying you $200 you might as well give me the paper. I want a refund. I dont want the paper ! When I inquired about signing up for a year offer. You told me when I called I could get a refund if I changed my mind . I want a refund. This is ridiculous. Its taking me four phone calls filing with the Better Business Bureau and yet Im still out $200 shame on you.

At the end of the term however, you would need to call me to let me know you prefer not to continue, or let me know if you choose to renew. I would give you the best rate available. I signed up for a trial of the OC Register Online. Before the trial date was over, I attempted to cancel the subscription. I went through Apple IOS to cancel under subscriptions, as this is how you would normally cancel an online/app subscription. However, the app was not listed. I went into my account on ocregister.com and attempted to cancel my subscription there but it said I didnt have an account. I thought maybe I had possibly canceled it and forgotten until I received a charge on my account for subscription renewal. I contacted customer service immediately. I was told to follow the steps I listed above to cancel. I told the representative that I had already followed those steps and it said I did not have an account. I was transferred two two other customer service representatives and finally the third one said my account was canceled but they wouldnt be able to refund me. They make it extremely difficult to close your account and I felt I was led to believe my account was already closed until I was charged. I contacted them the same day I was charged because I have no use for the service. I feel that they are purposely making it difficult so that they can charge people. Why can I not get a refund for a service that theyve cancelled before I had a chance to use it?In one of my attachments is a screenshot from ocregister.com showing as of August 14th (the day I was charged) I had no active subscription. In the second screenshot it shows my IOS Apple subscriptions - When you have a subscription and then close it, it would show under inactive. The third screenshot is an email with instructions from OC Register customer service instructing me to go into Apple IOS to cancel my subscription (which I couldnt do because it was never there to begin with)Business response
