Bought expensive dishwasher. After removing existing unit, Benson installer informed us that the new dishwasher would not fit b/c we remodeled with tile floor. Benson did not inform us that other brands would fit therefore we contracted to remove tiles so that the new dishwasher could be installed. Benson's installer apparently broke the unit during installation, which we discovered some 10 days later b/c of water damage below. By this time, the tiles had been replaced ($628 for removal and replacement). Bensons refused to take any responsibility and furthermore intended to charge us a service/labor charge to remove the leaking dishwasher. We are left sitting some $2000 in the hole plus significant water damage to our house with no working dishwasher and Bensons have left us high but not dry. This is unacceptable business practice!

      Benson's Maytag Inc Response

Bensons went to the home to install the dishwasher. Had to cut out the old dishwasher out of the opening, because new flooring had been installed in front of the old unit. We got the old unit out and attempted to install a new dishwasher, but it did not fit in the opening. We took away the new dishwasher and informed Mr ******* that it would not fit into the opening, without removing the tile floor or countertop. After returning to ********* home a couple of weeks later. We saw that he had removed some of the tile on the floor. We attempted to install the new dishwasher, but it would still not fit the hole opening. After talking to Mr ******* about the unit not fitting properly, he indicated to do whatever it took to get the dishwasher installed. His wife wanted this particular unit and not a set down unit, as they had already stepped up to a more expensive dishwasher before we had come out the first time. We got the dishwasher installed and operational upon leaving Mr *******, was satisfied with the installation and the dishwasher, he even tipped the installation team upon leaving. A week later Mr ******* called and indicated the dishwasher was leaking. Our service technician looked at and determined the motor and tub seal had been compromised and was leaking water. Because the unit was so tightly fitted and Mr ******* had the floor replaced, the technician could not work on the dishwasher. So we can not make any repairs to the unit.

The Benson installer was obviously aware immediately that the existing unit (which still worked at the time) was not going to come out without cutting it up. That would have been the first place to consult with me about the situation. Rather, they just cut it up and removed it, again, by now, unquestionably totally aware that the new unit was not going to fit. They left me with nothing but an empty hole in the wall that day, and 'consultation' that either the floor tiles or the countertop had to be removed. So, we contracted to have a 4'x4' area in front of the dishwasher hole removed. When Benson's returned to install the new unit, I was told once they put it in, it would not come back out again until it was time for replacement. The installer said nothing at all about the possibility of breaking the machine if they put it in. So, of course, when they left and the machine was running, I was satisfied ON THAT DAY and yes, tipped the installer. About a week later, our contractor replaced the tiles ($628 for that job). Then soon after I noticed water damage on the basement bathroom ceiling (I don't know exactly when that started because I nobody uses that bathroom much) which turned out to be the dishwasher. A Benson's repairman confirmed that the dishwasher was seriously damaged and was the source of the leak. So there I was, almost $2000 in, with serious damage to my house, and an unusable dishwasher. About a week later, Benson's calls to say that because I had 'authorized' the installation, they would refund me half of the cost of the unit, but were taking no responsibility whatsoever for other damages, plus (insult to injury) I would need to pay for the service/labor fees for them to come and remove the faulty dishwasher! Needless to say, that phone conversation got testy very quickly, and Benson's has not contacted me since, and certainly has not sent me even partial refund. Thank God I paid Benson's via ******** Card, who thoroughly invested the situation and refunded me at least the full costs I put on the card. In the meantime, I have contracted with another local appliance dealer, who will be installing a unit that fits the space. I will leave it to the reader to decide if Benson's business practices and ethics live up to the standards of the Better Business Bureau.
