I am a resident of Salem and have eaten at the tavern in the hotel several times. The last 3 experiences were terrible. Three friends and I had drinks and appetizers there last week. Three paid cash and I put my balance of $45 on my debit card, which I signed a slip for. That night I read an email from my bank notifying me that my account was overdrawn. Thankfully, I have overdraft protection. The tavern had not only taken $102 cash from the others but charged my bank account the full amount of the ****, $147.93. When I went to the hotel the next morning, the young manager told me that they did that to verify my account. I have NEVER had that happen anywhere before. He then told me that they would only charge me the $45 when the transaction finally went through. I reported the issue to my bank and they said to wait and see what transpired. Two days after the initial charge, the transaction went through as $45, but the restaurant made the mistake of charging my account the full amount as well as collecting $102 cash. There was no apology and no acknowledgement that a mistake had been made. The service has been unacceptable there the last 3 times we've been, and we willl not be back.
