We have just had a very bad experience with a group called Tree Maintenance. They list their address as 559 Bozeman Rd. Madison, MS 39110. They were working at our neighbor’s house and my wife asked them if they could trim some branches for us. The branches were over the house, and we were afraid they would damage the house if they fell. They agreed to do the job and explained that they charged “by the cut” which was weird. After they looked at our tree, they estimated that it would take 50-60 cuts to remove them. My wife agreed and after lunch they moved their lift truck to our front yard and commenced to cut. The next morning, they came back and said that we owed them for 100 cuts. They said that they actually did 115 cuts but that they were going to give us a discount and only charge for 100. They cut a total of seven branches the largest of which is about 8 inches in diameter. Some of the branches they cut were so small they would not have damaged our roof if they fell on it. They also cut the 8” branch back to 15 feet away from the house. Most of the branches they cut could have been reached if they stood on their truck so there was no need for the lift truck, I would have let them use my stepladder if they had asked. Our neighbor was happy with the work they did and what they charged her. But she said no one would work on her tree because her yard is one large flower garden and has been featured in several gardening books and they were worried about damaging her flowers. We made several mistakes in this transaction: agreeing to a charge per cut without establishing an agreed method for counting cuts. I was thinking they would make 10 or 12 cuts, but my wife agreed to their estimate, so we were willing to pay for 50-60 cuts. Obviously, there was no incentive for them to do the job quickly and easily since we were paying “by the cut”, but they charged us more than double the estimate without giving us an option to approve or decline their "revised" estimate.
