Current Alerts For This Business
BBB is issuing a warning about First Mutual Finance which appears to be operating an advance fee loan scam.
Consumers should not confuse the real bank, United Midwest Savings Bank and their division using the names First Mutual Financial and First Mutual Finance, with this advance fee loan scam using their names, or similar names, and their address.
We created this BBB Business Review on 1.26.15 when an Ohio consumer called BBB to report she had received a phone call advising her she had been approved for a loan, but would need to buy an insurance plan to get it.
As of 9.30.15 the phone numbers and website were still working.
Advance fee loans prey on people who may not otherwise be able to get a loan. Advance fee loan brokers often advertise in the newspaper, or use the internet to scan for loan applicants. Operators require a cash advance, usually a couple hundred dollars, to secure a loan.
In the case of First Mutual Finance, they asked for fee to pay for an insurance plan called EPPI.
BBB strongly advises would-be borrowers to exercise caution before paying advance fees to any unknown persons who say they can find loans. Never give your credit card, checking account, or social security numbers over the phone. If you are having financial problems, you may wish to seek assistance of a non-profit counseling service in your area.
According to the FTC, legitimate lenders never "guarantee" or say you are likely to get a loan or a credit card before you apply, especially if you have bad credit, no credit, or a bankruptcy. Legitimate lenders never ask you to pay for processing your application.
