I contacted Kuhn for service on my HVAC. At the visit, the technician could not give me a cost estimate or time frame for the fix but still insisted that I pay the $80 service charge. He left without resolution saying that he was having trouble getting a hold of the parts supplier to find out availability/cost. I went against my better judgement and paid even though the service visit wasn't complete. The next morning I was contacted with an estimate that seemed very high. I asked for a simple break out of cost (parts and labor) so that I could make a decision. The tech said that he could email it to me- which sounds like it's something they have and provide regularly for clients. After 30 minutes of waiting for it, the technician told me that the owner would be giving me a call. An hour later, the owner of the company, Ed, called and refused to discuss the fees. When I asked how he bills labor and parts, he said that he has never provided the split cost to any of his clients in 20 years of service. He then asked me- "When you go to a restaurant, do you ask your waitress how much each ingredient costs?" I told him I did not feel comfortable with his service if he was unwilling to be transparent. Even when I use an auto mechanic- they provide a breakout of cost for parts and labor. I don't have a problem paying for labor, I'd just like to know how that is billed. He continued to say that I was unreasonable for asking. I called a 2nd company that had the part availability and price in under 10 minutes. They shared upfront the part cost and then how they bill their labor charges. I hired them and they came within 6 hours, completed my fix, and was also $600 less than what Kuhn quoted to me. Ed Kuhn's lack of transparency and condescending response was unacceptable. If you want the run-around and lack of transparency- go with Kuhn. Ed said he would refund my $80 service charge, but he did not.
