BBB files indicate Self Financial Inc. has a pattern of complaints concerning contract and credit reporting issues. Specifically, consumer complaints allege objections about debts listed on their credit report including questions regarding liability for debts from Self Financial and/or Lead Bank. Some consumers allege they do not have a contract with Self Financial or in some instances have not received a copy of their original contract when they requested it from Self Financial Inc.
On October 12, 2023, Self Financial Inc. responded that their products report under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requirements resulting in both positive and negative information being supplied to the Credit Bureaus based on the actions of the consumer. Self Financial Inc. replied if their customer attempts to have negative history removed it is often an action recommended in social media circles, but consumers agree to Self Financial Inc.’s 1) Terms and Conditions which outlines the terms of the accounts Self Financial Inc. offers 2) Loan Documents in which the customer agree to the loan terms during onboarding and is provided a copy in their dashboard. 3) Cardmember Agreement (Secured card)-The customer agrees to the cardmember agreement and terms during their onboarding. The agreement is also provided in the customer’s dashboard. Self Financial’s response also detailed accounts cannot be created without a customer agreeing to it and other items during onboarding of both the Credit Builder and Secured Credit Card accounts.
BBB files also indicate that Self Financial Inc. has a pattern of complaints concerning consumers unaware of a personal loan or credit card opened in their name with Self Financial Inc.
Self Financial Inc. responded they have a robust practice of verifying the identity of their consumers during the onboarding process. BBB provided examples of complaints with these concerns and Self Financial Inc. responded claiming of ID theft continues to be a tactic promoted in social media circles as a method to remove delinquent tradelines; Self Financial Inc. responded the examples BBB referenced fit this narrative. Self investigated the complaints into possible ID theft and confirmed the customers agreed to the accounts in question and provided a response reflecting their findings.
BBB determined Self Financial Inc.’s response did not reflect a summary of actions to work on addressing or eliminating the underlying pattern of complaint concerns.

They are returning my automatic payments! I contacted my bank (Suncoast credit union) and they informed me that nothing has been returned on their end. I'm very concerned about this matter. In the mean time my credit score is dropping! Whenever I try to contact Self.Inc the automated service prompts me to enter my information, they then go on to say that they're closed, at anytime of day that I call. There was a payment that cleared just fine on 11-16-2021. Also This has just started happening this month. I have been a customer of theirs for a year now with no prior issues. They started to return my payments on 11-13-2021. I am very concerned about this.Business response

SELF / LEAD1326**** -They reported Lates on my consumer credit report. I was never late and my payments made on time. I already sent letter to bureau last several months asking to verify the mentioned account but i havent heard response eversince nor receive any documentation that can validate that I was late the following dates reported to my consumer credit report.Business response

Dear Sir/Madam:I am contacting you about the compromising of my social security number. I am a victim of Identity Theft. I contacted the ************************ and filed a complaint # and contacted the police department and obtained a police report # which both are attached. Please block and remove all information from my credit report, and send me an updated copy of my credit report. The following items do not belong to me and are a result of fraud that I did not authorize:Please remove it from my credit report.Identity Theft SELFINC/LEAD Account Number: *********Please remove it from my credit report.Please block and remove all information resulting from Identity Theft pursuant to FCRA 605B (15 U.S.C. & **** c-2) which states that these accounts must be removed within 4 Business Days of receipt. Also, please send an updated copy of my credit report to the above address. According to the act, there shall be no charge for this updated report. I have had this Self card for over a year and I paid on the account to get caught up and they froze my account. I have tried to contact them numerous times and they don't answer the phones it just hangs up on me. I have sent many emails and still nothing. They claim they are closing my account and all kinds of c*** and I told them since they don't answer my phone calls or emails to close everything and refund my money. Still the account is open and I'm over it. The next thing if this does not get fixed in a timely manner is I will file a lawsuit on them for Fraud. I'm tired of them ignoring me.Business response

So I had a self credit builder account which I paid off early it's been over a month and I still have not received my funds . There is no number to contact these people and I email them ****** just to get the run around and told that my account is frozen . They want a copy of my bank statements which I will not provide .
