The following is my experience with a new Theo ********************** Mantra 2 curved soprano sax I purchased recently that, while it being beautifully crafted and sounding great, has so far turned out to be unusable due to intonation issues.Given my past experience purchasing many wonderful TW mouthpieces, I assumed that the same superior product standards would be true with their saxophones. Granted, my experience may be atypical, but I felt the need let buyers know the potential of additional expense needed to bring a ************* to a satisfactory playing level. The new soprano I bought - starting with 2nd octave D - was playing about a semi-tone sharp regardless of trying multiple mouthpiece setups, including a few TW mouthpieces I have. I reached out to a representative who previously helped me with an initial small mechanical problem with the horn, and asked if perhaps there were any technical specifications that could assist a local tech in remedying the intonation problem. The representative wrote that I may need to experiment with ***********, but these things can vary horn to horn, and it's not something we set here in our shop - they come to us fully set up from the factory in ******.Since my local technician wasn't able to help, I hired an out-of-town sax intonation expert to fix the problem. To date I've spent about $600 (including shipping the horn), and so far the issue hasn't been fully resolved.Given the over 50 years I've played saxophone (all sizes including soprano for 40 years) I understand it's unreasonable to expect perfection with any horn regardless of cost and/or make . However there is a certain standard of playability (and intonation being a big part of that equation) that I would expect from a company like TW known for high product standards. Again, I may have bought a horn that slipped through the quality control cracks, but I feel it's important to caution potential buyers not to assume that a ************* will be ready for prime time out the box.
