Roof Replacement by Siding Unlimited This was our first experience with Siding Unlimited, herein SU. Ive done my best to provide as much detail as possible to clearly point out the deficiencies in our project, and with Siding Unlimited's business practices.Based on research of roofing companies, SUs membership with NARI, and familiarity with SU from WTMJ Fix It show, we hired SU to complete our roof and skylights replacement and signed their contract on 1/26/2024. We established a start date of April 1 or 2 if possible. Prior to this start date, a large dumpster and materials were dropped off in our driveway without any heads up. I was home at the time, and heard the commotion outside thus went to see what was going on. The dumpster and all materials had been placed in our driveway except for one last pallet. I would have appreciated it if someone from this crew would have simply rang my doorbell to inform me, and to ensure they placed the materials in a proper placement. Unfortunately they did not, and egress for my wifes vehicle entering & exiting the garage presented a concern to her. Therefore I moved her vehicle out & in of the garage during the timeframe of this in our driveway. Poor communication by SU.On day of work commencement, I spoke with lead roofer ****** and asked him to let me know prior to removing skylights, as I wished to place tarps below all four (4) skylights prior to their removal. ****** explained they planned to re-roof around the skylights and he wasnt told they were to be replaced. He checked the materials stack to see if they were delivered, and found them. Thus ****** and his team learned about ************ and reinstalling four (4) skylights after they arrived and began work on my job. Poor communication by SU.This next dialog is a copy/paste. Read carefully: 4/15/24, ******* with SU texted: Hey *** this is ******* with siding Unlimited..... if tomorrow afternoon would work to do the trim work on the skylights? My text reply, Ill be home from 9 AM to 3PM. She replied late that afternoon, Okay sounds good thank you the guys will be there sometime in the morning. I replied, see them then. SU workers arrived at my home at 7:48 AM on 4/16. 8:14 AM my cell phone was ringing, I didnt answer as I was driving. 8:15 AM ******* texted, Hey ***, this is ******* with SU. Are you home by chance the guys ar at ur house to install. I was driving at that time and didnt reply, and arrived at home at 8:40 AM. Workers were sitting in their truck when I arrived at home. Shortly after beginning to set up they came to me & said we need to go to the hardware store for some things. ******* didnt catch Ill be home from 9 AM to 3PM? SU patch up crew doesnt bring basic materials, like caulk, with them? Their completed work of the touch *** was subpar, but I made no complaints as they undoubtedly have minimal experience or have had little or no training in this. I plan to re- repair these myself. See photos I provided to *********************, salesman with SU, and judge for yourself. Absent training and poor communication.4/18/24 I went into ***** to see how/if roof vents were attached to bathroom fans duct work. None were connected nor sealed. Photos were provided to salesman with explanations. I explained these needed to be corrected, because we previously encountered a very serious attic mold problem from improper sealing of bath fan vents. (see photo provided). Wisconsin Insulation conducted ventilation corrections and re-ducting of these roof vents. Unacceptable work on behalf of SU.4/25 Met with ************* of SU to go over my expectations on how to correct the four (4) vents. I was assured **** was experienced with attic work, and connecting and sealing vent ducts to roof vents. He said he understood, and has done this type of work before. **** would be in attic & roof crew outside installing vents from roof. It was agreed upon that work would commence at 9 AM on 4/30/24 with **** working the inside of the attic. Meeting was a waste of my time, Daytons ************ time since **** was a no-show on job day. Poor communication, waste of my personal time, mischaracterized job execution.4/29 SU delivered several packs of shingles and 4 roof vents, the wrong type of vent to replace bath fan vents. I provided photos once again pointing out this error. SUs Poor communication has gotten worse, unacceptable execution.4/30 My cell phone alerted me at 8 AM that someone was at our front door. Roofing crew had arrived and were set up and working when I arrived at home at 8:35 AM. I stopped them, called them down from the roof and called *******. I explained that work was to commence at 9 AM. Roofers felt that they could begin work without materials; those were still in route (replacement roof vents). ******** discussed the problems I discovered with ducting not attached nor sealed to roof vents, and that this causes mold in the attic space. ****** explained they have never encountered my type of bath venting before, and were not told to do anything different at my home, and they complete all their jobs as they did mine. This is a direct quote via text from *********************, SU salesman: I would argue not only did our best crew, you *** have gotten the best roofers in **!. Poor communication, grossly over stated and untrue claims of competency and workmanship.4/30 **** from SU didnt arrive, ******* explained he was on another job. Roofer ****** was going into our attic. It was quite clear after speaking with ****** that he had never been in an attic before. (Didnt know to bring a ladder to access the second floor attic, no flashlight, and didnt know anything about where to step without falling through my ceiling). I explained to ****** and the other two roofers that I wouldnt allow ****** to go into my attic based on his lack of experience, and the danger and liability this would have presented. Since neither *** nor ****** offered to take Georges place, I offered to be inside the attic, and was changing clothes to do so when *** offered to be the inside attic worker. *** took Georges place. I firmly believe that had I not determined that ****** was incapable of walking in an attic, he would have fallen through the ceiling within his first or second step, potentially injuring himself, causing major property damage, and resultant insurance claims. Why wasnt I informed **** of SU would not be on the job? I needed to start from the very beginning and explain the entire duct connection and sealing process with the roofing crew. More time wasted for them and for me. It appeared to me they knew they had returned to re- install the roof vents, but were completely unfamiliar with my expectations of how the replaced vents and ducting were to be installed. Disturbingly poor communications and execution, lack of training of SU contractors. The roof team did not have the proper materials that ********************** and I discussed in detail during our 4/25 meeting, namely aluminum foil ducting tape to seal the ducting to roof vents, and seal any leakage that *** have occurred at the bath fans themselves during initial roof vent removal. Nor did they have a respirator or flashlight. I loaned each of these to *** to continue working the job and averting a complete shut down that day. Poor communication, poor training, and negligence in the services youre providing.4/30 When the corrective replacements were made to roof vents and ducting, I spoke with the roofing team about their experience with my job. They replied by explaining to me that they have never done a roof job like this....that required direct connection and sealing of bath vents to their respective roof vents. Poor communication, lack of training, and negligence in not knowing what service youre even providing.Summary This was a project that started with good faith, but unfortunately deteriorated into a bad experience for my wife and I. It should be apparent that Siding Unlimited failed in numerous instances in their communications, and execution. Both internal communications and external communications are lacking at SU from our experience. I was told by the roofers that they have completed all their roof jobs as theyve done mine, initially, and were never asked to duct and seal bathroom venting as they did when they returned. I believe them with complete confidence. Shaking your head at your contractors work is a weak, dismissive response. These contractors were in your employ for Siding Unlimited, and I do not place blame on them. I had established a positive rapport with all of the roofers, only to have had it spoiled by Siding Unlimited. I do NOT appreciate being the bad guy in this job in the eyes of **************************, *** and ******. You owe these roofers an apology, much better *communication*, and then training to ensure your expectations are met on behalf of your customers. Dont you think you need to know what services youre offering your customers? When we consider that all roofing jobs are undoubtedly completed by Siding Unlimited in a substandard manner that allows warm, humid ************* air to escape into residential attics, it begs the question of how many home owners have a mold problem growing in their attics, unknown to them? Again, I was assured I was getting SUs best roof installing team. Most people dont explore their attic, but home inspectors do when the home is put on the market for sale.I intend to share these pertinent details of my experience with NARI, the Better Business Bureau, WTMJ ************* reviews and perhaps others, as I believe I would be remiss in allowing these types of business practice to go unnoticed.
