On 9/15, my car broke down on the road and AAA towed it to the Midas on Telegraph. Upon looking at my car, *** told me that I needed a new battery, alternator, brake pads, and shocks. He was insistent that my brake pads were *very* worn down. He quoted me $3800. This all seemed weird to me, because my partner just got me new brake pads a few months ago.I called another mechanic after seeing this quote and got his advice. He quoted me $1k for just the battery and alternator. I went back to the counter and told *** Id like to decline service, but still pay the diagnostic fee ($160). He quickly took the brake pads and shocks off the quote, disregarding the earlier advice about needing them changed ASAP, and quoted me $1700 for the battery/alternator. I declined again.Pause to note: I am a woman in my twenties. I dont look like I know anything about cars, which is a true assumption about me. I was alone.I get my car towed to another mechanic. He uses a diagnostic tool and finds out: my battery is fine, my alternator is fine, my brake pads dont need replacing for another 6 months, and my shocks are fine. Unfortunately, it looks like the codes have been cleared, so he wasnt able to figure out what truly causes the break down. After sitting for 24 hours without any work done, my car suddenly started running again. All I know is that Midas tried to sell me four car parts that I absolutely did not need. I do not know how many employees were in on the **********, 9/30, I go back to Midas. My partner called a few days ago and I was promised a refund for the diagnostic fee. They gave me the refund upon walking in. *** was working the counter again. When I told him that my car did not need any of the parts he tried to sell me, he shrugged.*** accused me of libel *and* slander (not realizing these are two different things) when I was in the store that first day. For this reason, I am being very intentional about my word choices.
