UPDATE: January 2023, Mail was returned to BBB as "Return to Sender, No Such Street, Unable to Forward".
In December 2022, BBB
received a Scam Tracker report on Powerbuilt. The consumer stated he ordered a
product and was emailed an order number. The consumer alleged the product never
arrived and attempts to reply to the email and use the messaging feature on the
company website were unsuccessful. The report stated no refund was issued.
Whois.com shows the website was registered in March 2022 for only one year, with the registered contact from China. The company website, www.powerbuiltsale.com, shows several red flags. According to Google maps and USPS.com, the address listed is not a legitimate address. There is no phone number listed on the website. The Privacy Policy cuts off midway through in the middle of a word and the Terms and Conditions sections uses Central Time rather than Eastern Standard Time suggesting both were copied from other websites.
BBB offers the following
tips when purchasing items online:
- Know the advertiser. Some of the best deals are only available online, but be careful. It’s easy for a fake site to mimic a famous retailer’s website, so make sure you are shopping with a legitimate site. Check for an about page and a contact us section. BBB recommends ensuring the phone numbers and email addresses are both legitimate and responsive. If the site is missing contact information or has typos, these are red flags.
- Beware of too-good-to-be-true deals. Offers on websites and in unsolicited emails may offer free or very low prices on hard-to-find items. There may be hidden costs, or your purchase may sign you up for a monthly charge. Look for and read the fine print.
- Shop with a credit card. In case of a fraudulent transaction, a credit card provides additional protections; it’s easier to dispute charges that you didn’t approve or to get your money back if there is a problem. Debit cards, prepaid cards or gift cards don’t have the same protections as a credit card.
- Report such instances to BBB.org/Scamtracker, Federal Trade Commission and/or your State Attorney General’s office.
